UK Wordcamp
Found this on Tony Scott’s blog, it’s the (i think) official logo for the UK Wordcamp, which is going to be great
I’m hoping to be there, too ;D
Blogger Sweatshop
I thought this was pretty good, for those who are in need of a laugh tonight,,
Don’t blog too hard!
Gallery Messing
I’ve finished messing with my overall interface thingy now, and I’m onto the gallery template (the bit you get when you click the thumbnail in one of my posts).. It’s going well ![]()
AVG 8.0
I’ve just upgraded to AVG8, because I heard all sorts of good stuff about it, and it was right, it’s pretty cool. The new interface is cool, and it works better with Vista, and then there’s the integration thing with Firefox, which means that it scans things like Google links to make sure their safe, which is pretty cool.
Nice popup thing telling me I’m safe
For those that don’t have it already; Get it!
you can find it over here.
Note: If there’s a problem with the layout on this post, it’s because I’ve not quite worked out how to setup the template for images yet.. ![]()
Wahey! Wordpress 2.5.1 :)
They Released Wordpress 2.5.1
Lots of new bugfixes and stuff..
Ubuntu 8.04 is Here
Yay, they released the new Ubuntu!
I’m downloading it now, time to see what it’s like ![]()
No Spam Today?!?
Well, today is the first day in the last 3 months that I’ve had a big fat zero in them count. Normally Akismet picks up something, but there’s been nothing today. Not that I’m complaining ![]()
One Day to Ubuntu
I know, I already wrote one aside yesterday, but im doing it again
One more day ’till the new Ubuntu, I’m looking forward to it ![]()
What Happened to WPDesigner?
It sold a little over a month ago, and (apart from one badly worded “Hi, I’m the new owner” post) there’s been absolutely bugger all.
I thought it was one theme per month? I paid for my membership :O I also used to enjoy reading Small Potato’s posts, and now.. nothing? C’mon Patel, or whatever your name is?!?
I’m sure the value of WPD has fallen through the floor too. It sold in the $XX,XXX range, and now, it’s probably worth.. $1,000 maybe?

2 Days to Ubuntu 8.04

WebWare 2008
I’ve just seen the results for the WebWare 2008, it’s nice to see that Wordpress is in there ![]()
Asides Again
I’ve setup a cool little thing in the sidebar to show my asides now, if you scroll down, because I thought they looked a little messy in the main body of the page. It’s all playing nicely now, which is great news.
I’m still experimenting with my design, and for anyone out there (yeah :P) who thinks this site looks like Brian Gardners old site, you’re right. I bought usage rights for the theme
Good stuff.. ![]()
Ooh, Twitter
I went ahead and signed up for twitter.. Now to decide what to do with it ![]()
Wordcamp UK Date
It looks like the Wordcamp in the UK is going to be held on the 19th and 20th of July, in Birmingham.
I bought me a developers license!
Aye, I finally got around to it, after wanting to for like.. months
I bought a Developers License for the revolution theme series (which I think are some of the best), partly because I want to play with them, and partly because it means I can develop a few websites.
It also means I can develop websites for clients using those themes (and charge what I like ), which is cool.
You can find the themes here, if you’re interested (yeah, like) or, if you don’t fancy using my affiliate link, head over here..
Entrecard (again)
I’m wondering what on earth is going on with their prices? I mean, they’ve skyrocketed, like 10x as much to advertise on some of the bigger blogs
JohnChow.com costs 4000 credits now, up from about 400 in the past
I’ve only got a thousand..
Once I’ve got enough credits, I’ll run a competition, for everyone who drops their card on me, but I’ve not gotten around to that yet.
Design Messing
I’m messing with the design again, so a lot of stuff won’t work for a while, while I play.
In my usual style, I’m working on it on my live site, because I like being able to see the effect on my plugins, and so on..
An update (16th) I’ve got a theme up and running, it’s the cool revolution one, on a friends developer license (he customized it a *little* for me), and now I’m going to rip it apart
I’m going to be buying my own dev license shortly, but until then, thankyou to the awesome friend
Thanks ![]()
Permalinks on Wordpress
If you’re serious about blogging with Wordpress, Permalinks are important. They change your blog sub-urls from how it’s shipped (something like ?p=3 ) to much prettier stuff, the format of which, you choose. Wordpress themselves wrote about it here, but some people feel it’s not simple enough. You must have an apache webserver for this to work.
When you get to the permalinks page, it all looks simple. Choose one of the options in the list, they are often the easiest, and personally, I think the /year/month/day/postname one is good. That’s all good. The category and tag archives should be ok, don’t worry about them for simplicity. Choose one of the filled in options, then click submits.
But what’s this? It says you should update your .htaccess now? Well, I’d better run you through that now, hadn’t I. Scroll to the bottom of the page, you’ll find code like this:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>
Copy that. Next up, fire up Notepad, or some sort of basic text editor. Notepad is good for Windows, and the plain text editor in Linux is fine. Paste the code in. Now save it as 1.htaccess.
Now, fire up FTP. Check that you’ve not already got a .htaccess file in your root directory, like public_html, and if there is, scroll down. I’m assuming there isn’t. Just upload the 1.htaccess file in there, good and simple, and rename it to just .htaccess.
Now head over to your blog, and click a link. If it loads, you’ve done it right. If not, something’s wrong.
If there is already a .htaccess file in your root directory, then download it, and open it with notepad. Paste it’s contents above the code above on the 1.htaccess file we just made, and you’re good to go. Follow the instructions above.
If it’s not working, follow the process again, and if it’s still not working, then it’s possible that Mod_Rewrite isn’t working or active. Ask your host about this.
A Cool One Liner
Do you understand this? “There are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary, and those that don’t”
PayPerPost
Aye, I signed up.
I thought it looked like fun, and as my blog is now old enough, it’s worth a try
You might see that I’ve done one featured post before, I decided to wait and see how it went before I actually wrote about it.
Well, so far I’ve earned $8.50, because I don’t want to do too many posts, i want to limit them. Every penny (or cent) I earn goes towards my quest to earn $15k online, it’s just a little bit that helps.. lol.
The job description asks if I’ve made any new friends, well I guess sorta, cos I’ve started commenting on a blog I saw featured, and I’m getting commented back, so all is good
My thoughts on PayPerPost are this: It’s a cool service, but people using it too much will just end up with spammy blogs, which is the opposite of what I want. I feel that John Chow’s blog has become somewhat like this
I heard about PPP a long time ago, from a friend (I forget who) but at that time, my blog wasn’t old enough to be accepted. I remembered about it a month ago, signed up, and grabbed an oppertunity, just to give it a blast
For those who don’t know, PPP is a website which solicits payment per post, so you get sponsored to make a post about something, maybe about a company or website, to create a buzz about them
It’s all gone well so far, so ‘gratz to the payperpost team
